Police allege the 41-year-old was drunk when the Nissan Bluebird she was driving near Whatawhata crashed head-on into a Suzuki Swift, killing a front seat passenger in it Shayna Kumitau.

She has been charged with excess blood alcohol causing death, nuskin group aggravated careless driving causing death, three charges of excess blood alcohol causing injury and three charges of aggravated careless driving causing injury.

Police say the crash injured three other people, nuskin one of which was still recovering from very serious injuries.

At the time of the February 14 crash on State Highway 23 between Hamilton and Raglan police said the Nissan had crossed the centre line before hitting the Suzuki.

Police want the laying of the charges to remind people to be safe on the roads over the holiday weekend.

"It is hoped that in announcing the charges on the eve of the official Queen's Birthday Holiday Period, nu skin hk drivers will be deterred from getting behind the wheel after drinking and risk causing similar tragedies," said Sergeant Grant Houston.

The woman will appear in Hamilton District Court on July 24.
